Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo Wednesday promoted former OPEC president Edmund Daukoru from junior oil minister to a full energy minister with an expanded portfolio, following a cabinet reshuffle.

With his promotion to full minister, which went along with a realignment of ministries, Daukoru has responsibility for the former petroleum ministry and the power sector of the former ministry of power and steel.

Under the revamp the steel sector of the former ministry is now merged with the ministry of solid minerals and renamed mines and steel development ministry.
Before Daukoru's new appointment, President Olusegun Obasanjo was the de facto oil minister.

An official document shown to the press indicates that 29 federal ministries have been shrunk to 19 while six new ministers have been appointed to replace those who recently resigned mostly to pursue their political ambitions.
