The Presidents of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and of the Republic of Bolivia, Evo Morales, signed 4 agreements in energy, political and economic matters, where the Agreement for the Creation of the Organization of South American Gas Producing and Exporting Countries (OPEGASUR) stands out, in the framework of a ceremony that both Presidents held with social organizations from Bolivia.

OPEGASUR will be the authority that will seek gas sovereignty for the South American peoples, a better value for natural resources, the exchange of technology and experiences, and the industrialization of gas and joint investments in the energy sector, among other benefits and functions.

President Chavez indicated that “only together can we achieve our objectives”, when referring to the implementation of each project that Venezuela, Bolivia, Cuba, Argentina and Ecuador have undertaken with the purpose of reaching South American unity. “But for that we need to make people aware”, he mentioned.

“Bolivia has a lot of gas, but they only produce it for export; now, with the Bank of the South we can finance a project to produce gas for Bolivia, undertaking the fight against exclusion, because soon will come the day when every Bolivian citizen will have this service available in his or her house”, Chavez explained.

On his part, President Evo Morales thanked the visit of President Chavez to the Bolivian city of El Alto, and classified the Venezuelan President and the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, as Commanders of the Liberating Forces of Latin America and all of its peoples.

Similarly, Presidents Morales and Chavez signed the Adhesion of Bolivia to the Bank of the South, an organization that will finance significant projects to help the development of South American peoples; the Call for the Congress of the Peoples in Cochabamba; and the Increase in Contributions for the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) and the Deepening of the Peoples’ Trade Treaty - TCP.

“We are determined to be free or to die attempting it”, affirmed the Venezuelan President regarding the intent to achieve true sovereignty of gas resources. “And to do so, it is necessary to make progress in a project we have already created with Cuba, Bolivia and Nicaragua, ALBA, which has open doors for all the peoples of our America”, he asserted.

It is worth mentioning that in this sense, the Ministry of Popular Power for Energy and Petroleum of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as well as Petroleos de Venezuela’s office in the Andean nation, PDVSA Bolivia, has extensively worked with the state company Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), providing consultancy on the nationalization of hydrocarbons and data analysis to determine the potential of hydrocarbon wells in areas located in the Tarija department.

By signing these new agreements, Venezuela and Bolivia strengthen the South American union initiative under the principles of solidarity and cooperation.
