Uruguay, faced with continued supply concerns from gas-strapped
Argentina, is studying securing supplies of LNG from global markets,
Pedro de
Aurrecoechea, vice president of state-owned power group UTE, told
Platts in an
interview.
UTE on Monday
signed an agreement with Petrobras to begin a feasibility
study to build a regasification terminal at Punta del Tigre, where
UTE has
operateed a gas-fired power plant since mid-2006. De Aurrecoechea
said that
one of the options to be considered by the study is to have a terminal
with 6
million cu meters/d of capacity. The UTE vice president said that
the study
with Petrobras would "take months" to complete.
"We signed
a similar agreement [like with Petrobras] a month ago with BG
[to build a regas terminal]," he said. BG is the operator and
40% owner of the
Southern Cross pipeline that transports gas from Argentina to southern
Uruguay.
Some of UTE?s
headaches in recent years have been dealing with erratic
power and gas supply cutbacks from Argentina, low rainfall and burgeoning
economic growth and demand. The lion's share -- 1,538 MW -- of Uruguay's
total
installed capacity of over 2,100 MW comes from hydropower installations.
