The United States is presuring Petrobras, the Brazilian state oil company, to decrease its operations in Iran, according to an article in daily newspaper Valor Econômico on Friday.

Valor Econômico reported, that the US ambassador in Brasília, Clifford Sobel; told Sérgio Gabrielli, president of Petrobras, that the US was concerned over the company's increasing activities in the country.

The article mention, Sobel saying that such activities might "create complications" for Petrobras's operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Petrobras did not want to comment on the article. Sobel was not immediately available.

Petrobras said ;ast month that together with Repsol YPF and Iranian NIDC, had begun exploratory drilling in the Persian Gulf and was also said it was preparing to sign a $470m contract on exploration and production in the Caspian Sea.

Iran's issue wil, probably be raised at a meeting on Saturday between the President of Brazil, Lula Da Silva and George W. Bush at Camp David.

The Brazilian and US presidents are expected to reaffirm their commitment to joint initiatives on new energie salternatives, like biofuels and ethanol fuel.
