Brazil's Braskem produces HDPE from sugar-cane derived ethanol

Brazil's Braskem has produced the world's first high density polyethylene
based on ethanol from sugar cane, the company said Thursday. The company is
now engaged in a study that could see Braskem start up a 200,000 mt/year plant
by the end of 2009 using renewable fuels as a feedstock.

The new HDPE was the result of a $5 million research and development
project that created a pilot unit for ethylene production based on renewable
raw materials at Braskem's Technology and Innovation Center in Brazil.

The unit is now producing enough quantities of PE for commercial
development of the product. Braskem has targeted several clients that will
test resin to confirm it meets all the quality standards needed to compete on
the international market.
