New York's Manhattan island under partial blackout

New York's Manhattan island Wednesday was under a partial blackout affecting buildings and subway lines alike, the city's fire and transport departments said.

Several subway lines were shut down and many buildings in Manhattan's Upper East Side were without electricity since 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) as a result of the power failure.

The blackout, which came during a heat wave, began shortly before 4:00 pm when several subway lines ground to a halt on the east side of the island above 59th street. Passengers were able to evacuate at stations since trains could move along the lines to the stations even though the signal system was down, said New York City Transit spokesman Deirdre Parker.

"Due to severe weather conditions, many customers are without service," the Con Edison power company said on its voicemail.

The company said other blackouts affected the Bronx borough and the northern suburb of White Plains.
