The Bolivian government decided to
reinforce military control at two oil plants in the southern locality
of Yacuiba on Monday, after farmers blocked routes threatening to
occupy the installations.
The
organizations of farmers and livestock raisers have also been blocking
Bolivia's main highway east to Argentina and threatened
to occupy petroleum plants, to demand that 185,000 acres not be
turned over to Guarani communities.
According to Yacuiba leader Gualberto Duran, 80 percent of the nation's
commerce travels on the main roads linking Bolivia with Argentina
and blocking causes half a million dollars in losses a day to the
national economy.
Assistant Land Minister Alejandro Almaraz assured that at the conclusion
of reversion of lands not meeting a specific social-economic function
in the area, there will be possibilities of assisting farmers and
livestock raisers.
According to Yacuiba Police Chief Jaime Reyes, Armed Forces must
take the precaution of guarding the petroleum installations to guard
Bolivian State strategic resources.
