Japanese trader Toyota Tsusho, and Brazilian companies Odebrechet
and
Queiroz Galvao July 20 joined a memorandum of understanding signed
by
Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company Petrobras and Itochu June
8 to
evaluate the potential of production biofuels in the Pernambuco hinterland.
The studies will look at producing ethanol from sugarcane and biodiesel
from feedstock available in the region, according to a company document
obtained by Platts.
The study, which will begin this year, will examine an
upstream-to-downstream project to produce ethanol in Pernambuco,
Platts
reported earlier. It is expected to last 18 months.
As part of the study, the companies will consider an ethanol plant
of
200,000-250,000 kiloliters/year capacity with an estimated cost around
$200
million, to begin operations in 2012.
The partners will study export of the biofuels to Japanese markets
as
well as to other parts of the world.
Together with Itochu, Toyota Tsusho will look at exporting ethanol
to
North America or Southeast Asia as Japan has limited blending of
ethanol into
gasoline.
