A North Sea oil rig operated by American drilling
company Diamond Offshore was partially evacuated on Tuesday after a fire in the
engine room that has since been put out, a spokesman for the company told AFP.
Of the 87 people on board the rig, 125 miles (200 kilometres) northeast of the
Scottish town of Aberdeen, 32 were evacuated by two helicopters that left the
rig earlier Tuesday evening. No one was injured.
"We had a small fire in the engine room at the Ocean Guardian rig," the
spokesman said. "That fire is out."
"As a precaution, we began down-manning non-essential personnel, and 32
people were evacuated from the rig as a precaution. No personnel have been injured,
and everybody has been accounted for. We are now just in the process of assessing
damage."
The company spokesman said he could not comment on how the fire was started,
but said that an investigation team will go on board the rig, "and we will
determine how this was caused."
