The head of French energy giant Total said Wednesday
the company does not intend to invest in Russian counterpart Gazprom.
French President Nicholas Sarkozy said in Moscow earlier that French companies
were ready "to buy into Gazprom."
Total president Christophe de Margerie said his enterprise was not one of the
companies, when questioned by AFP on the sidelines of an energy conference in
Paris.
"I am not aware that Gazprom has asked me anything of this kind," he
said.
He said it was not Total's policy to take minority shareholdings in other oil
companies. "We want to be in charge ourselves of our operations," he
said.
Earlier a Total spokesman said the company wanted to develop its ties with Gazprom.
"We are trying to build our partership with Gazprom and we are in discussions
with other Russian companies, such as Rosneft," a Total spokeswoman told
AFP.
"We have a cooperation agreement with Gazprom for the Shtokman gas field," she
said.
Total in July took a 25 percent stake in a consortium that is developing the
huge Shtokman site in northern Russia.
Sarkozy made his comments at a press conference in Moscow after talks with Russian
President Vladimir Putin.
