Iran's OPEC governor, Hossein Kazempour Ardebili, said
Monday OPEC would
not discuss an increase in crude oil supply when ministers
and heads of state
and government from OPEC member states meet in Riyadh
on November 15-18, the
official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.
" OPEC will not discuss an increase in oil production at the Riyadh
symposium," said Kazempour.
He was asked to comment on a remark made by Saudi Arabian oil minister
Ali Naimi on Sunday, that ministers would discuss an output hike at their next
meeting.
"OPEC oil ministers are not supposed to talk about the increase of oil
production in Riyadh," Kazempour said, adding that Naimi meant the issue
would
be discussed December 5, when OPEC ministers are due to hold an extraordinary
meeting in the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.
Naimi said after a brief visit to Kuwait on Sunday that it was premature
to talk about an OPEC production hike, but that this would be discussed when
ministers meet. Some news reports interpreted this as meaning OPEC would
discuss a production increase at the Riyadh summit.
But the gathering of heads of state and government in the Saudi capital,
to be preceded by a ministerial meeting and symposium on Thursday, is expected
to be a ceremonial affair. OPEC sources say the statement to be issued by the
leaders of the 12 member states has already been drafted. Once approved by the
ministers, it will be submitted to the leaders to be issued as a communique at
the end of OPEC's third summit.
