Chavez
pardons 2002 coup leaders, oil strikers
CARACAS
Petroleumworld.com, Jan 01, 2008
President Hugo Chavez on Monday announced an amnesty
for some of the jailed leaders of a failed 2002 coup against him and of a two-month
oil industry strike that ended in January 2003.
Chavez did not indicate how many people benefit from his decree, but former Miranda
state governor Enrique Mendoza convicted of taking over VTV television during
the April 2002 attempted coup was not one of them.
The president said on the last day of the year that he decided to release these
prisoners "to send a message to the country that we can live together despite
our differences."
