The crown prince of gas-rich Qatar on Tuesday laid
the cornerstone for a 3.2-billion-dollar ammonia and urea complex to be operated
by the Qatar Fertiliser Company (QAFCO).
The facility, dubbed QAFCO 5, will include two ammonia plants with a combined
capacity of 4,600 tonnes a day and a urea plant with a capacity of 3,850 tonnes
a day, said the company's managing director Khalifa Abdullah al-Sowaidi.
The project, to be built in the industrial centre of Mesaeed, will be completed
in early 2011, a statement said.
QAFCO, which already operates four ammonia and urea plants, had in December awarded
construction of the new complex to a consortium of Italian firm Snamprogetti
and South Korea's Hyundai.
Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani also laid the cornerstone for a
250-million-dollar project to build a melamine plant which will go on stream
in the first quarter of 2009.
The project is a joint venture between QAFCO, which will own 60 percent of the
plant, and Qatar Intermediate Industries Holding Company.
