Energy giant StatoilHydro has discovered a new gas
reserve in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said Thursday.
The size of the discovery in the Alve satellite field, about 16 kilometres (10
miles) southwest of the Norne field already in production, is believed to be
between three and five billion cubic metres (105-180 billion cubic feet) of natural
gas.
A thin layer of oil under the gas was also found, the Petroleum Directorate said.
"The licensees will consider how the additional resources proven in the
exploration extension may be recovered," it said in a statement.
StatoilHydro owns 85 percent of the bloc where the field was discovered.
