Venezuela: Drilling underway at PDVSA Mariscal Sucre

CUMANA, Venezuela
Petroleumworld.com, June 19, 2008

Venezuelan state energy company PDVSA has begun drilling its first offshore natural gas well at the Dragon field, part of the Mariscal Sucre project off Venezuela, according to media reports.

The well is being drilled by Neptune Marine drillship Neptune Discoverer, which is under a four-year contract with PDVSA. In a ceremony to welcome the Neptune Discoverer, Venezuela's Minister of Energy and Petroleum and President of PDVSA Rafael Ramirez said the drillship is one of two drillships PDVSA plans to use for drilling offshore Venezuela.

Venezuela is adjusting its oil industry mechanisms to increase crude production from 3.20 million barrels per day to 3.45 million barrels by the end of this year.

To fulfill this target, state-run oil firm PDVSA will invest $15 billion in oil exploitation, production and refining, PDVSA Vice President Luis Vierma announced.

In remarks published by Zulia-based Panorama daily, Vierma said that Venezuela currently produces 3.20 barrels daily, which is the quota set before the Organization of Petroleum Producing Countries.

Production has remained constant, without stopping, despite having got an industry virtually in ruins because of the oil strike, he recalled.

He added that in the country's eastern, a new production record was set, with a million barrels of crude produced daily.
