Brazil's Petrobras plans to boost production of thermal electricity
HOUSTON
Petroleumworld.com, Sept 22, 2008
Brazilian state-controlled energy giant Petrobras said new natural gas finds and an increased number of pipelines will allow it to consolidate its position as the country's leading generator of thermal electricity.
The company's gas and energy director, Maria das Gracas Foster said that Petrobras plans to boost its output of thermal electricityfrom its current level of 5510 megawatts annually to 7150 megawatts by 2010.
Of that projected total, 5525 MW will be generated by burning natural gas, while the rest will come from other sources such as diesel and biomass, she said.
"The company has clearly positioned itself as a generator of electricity." Foster said.
Brazil has the largest electricity market in South America and meets over 80 percent of that demand through hydroelectricity generation, although this makes the country vulnerable to power supply shortages in times of drought.
