Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa said on Twitter on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump told him he is “pro ethanol” and will stand by a campaign promise to support the ethanol industry.
“He assured me he's pro ethanol” and “I'm free” to tell the people of Iowa “he's standing by his campaign PROMISE,” Grassley said in a Tweet.
When running for president last year, Trump said he was supportive of the lucrative corn ethanol industry, a major issue in a key campaign state.
The Environmental Protection Agency oversees the Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires oil refiners to blend biofuels like ethanol into gasoline.
The agency is taking public comments until Aug. 31 on its July proposal for biofuels use next year.
Grassley previously called the plan a “mixed bag,” praising the agency's targets for conventional ethanol use while criticizing the plan to cut requirements for advanced biofuels.
Biofuel producers and agricultural states like Iowa have been concerned that the EPA may cave to pressure from the oil industry to ease the burden of the Renewable Fuel Standard.
