France does not rule out building new nuclear reactors - Macron

By Reuters

Petroleumworld 02 14 2018

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday he would not rule out France building new nuclear reactors to replacing state-controlled utility EDF's ageing reactors.

“There is no taboo about this subject,” Macron told reporters.

Macron said he remained committed to reducing France's carbon emissions and his promise to close coal-fired plants but did not detail how he would go about reducing the share of nuclear energy in French power generation.

He said he was waiting for the schedule to complete the nuclear plant EDF is building in Flamanville, northern France, and for studies by nuclear regulator ASN before adjusting France's multi-year energy plan.

“No options should be excluded,” he said.

He said the ASN would rule on which of the older reactors might pose safety problems and added that the closure of nuclear plants would depend on how quickly renewables capacity can be ramped up.
