Business response to Cabinet reshuffle mixed - SFBA

Daphne Bartlett, president of the San Fernando Business Association, says new National Security Minister Stuart Young should be responsible only for that ministry given its strategic importance.

“What concerns us is that the new Minster of National Security has a very heavy burden. There are already over 300 murders. The Prime Minister took someone with two important portfolios and put him in such an important ministry. Will he be there to decorate the ministry? I think that he should handle the Ministry of National Security alone,” she said

Bartlett hopes Young and newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Gary Griffith, are able to work effectively together.

Emphasising that the nation wants results from the Cabinet reshuffle, she added: “At this point we are bursting at our seams and we just want results.”

On the reassignment of Maxie Cuffie as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration, Bartlett wondered if he is well enough to give “value for money,” or is just collecting a salary.

“A government portfolio is important as you are running a country. You should not be there just to get a salary. That is what it appears to us. He is an ill man,” she said.

Abrahim Ali, PRO of San Juan Business Association, said the reshuffle will not change much in the governance of the country.

“The San Juan Business Association takes note of that move as one that is just what it is, a reshuffle. It is reshuffling the cards without any real purpose,” he said.

Ali said the removal of removing Edmund Dillon from the National Security Ministry, like the appointment of Gary Griffith as Police Commissioner, is a bad move.

“Mr Young is taking that portfolio. We do not know his ability in dealing with criminal activity in the country,” he said.

Ramchand Rajbal Maraj, president of the Couva/Point Lisas Chamber welcomed the changes in Cabinet which he said brings hope.

“It would bring a refreshing type of atmosphere as there is a new Commissioner of Police. It would bring some sort of hope when people see a shift in the operational situation with respect to the head,” Maraj said.
