Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim on Monday asked US counterpart
Condoleezza Rice to organize a UN Security Council meeting on
post-election tensions in Haiti, officials said.
The United States presides the UN Security Council for the month
of February and has the power to set its agenda. Brazil commands
the 9,500-strong UN stabilization force in Haiti.
Amorim "received a phone call from Rice, during which they
spoke of Haiti, and Amorim suggested organizing a Security Council
meeting" on the situation in the volatile Caribbean country,
a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
Rice "appeared favorable to examining the matter," the
spokesman said.
Amorim later instructed the Brazilian ambassador to the UN, Ronaldo
Saldenberg, to hold consultations with countries leading international
efforts to bring stability to Haiti, the official said.
Violent protests have erupted in Haiti as it waits for the results
of landmark presidential and legislative elections, the first
since former president Jean Bertrand Aristide fled the country
two years amid popular discontent.
Thousands of supporters of frontrunner Rene Preval have taken
to the streets demanding he be named head-of-state -- even though
results indicate Preval has not got the 50 percent needed to win
the election outright in the first round.
