An "operational event" affected a unit at Venezuela's 640,000 b/d Amuay
refinery on Friday night, Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA said in a
statement Saturday.

A furnace attached to the No. 4 hydrodesulfurization unit was affected,
the company said.

Caracas daily El Nacional said Saturday that a "strong explosion"
occurred at Amuay that shook nearby residential buildings and caused blackouts
in neighboring areas.

A spokesman from PDVSA said Sunday he could not confirm whether there had
been an explosion and could not provide any information other than the
contents of the press release.

The statement said the company was preparing to start up the unit after
planned maintenance when the "event" occurred.

No other units at the refinery were affected and domestic and
international supply of oil products remain normal, the statement said.

The company said it had formed an investigation team to determine the
cause of the incident.
