JAMAICA'S
technology and commerce minister, who's also charged with responsibility
for energy, Phillip Paulwell, recently ago disclosed that energy
negotiations between Jamaica's and Trinidad and Tobago's Governments
are proceeding on a "fast timetable".
Speaking
to Trinidad based journalists who paid a visit to his New Kingston
Jamaica offices, Paulwell said: "We are in dialogue with
Trinidad and Tobago.
"We
are awaiting finalisation of the agreement for the supply of liquefied
natural gas and we have established a framework where both the
National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago and the Petroleum
Corporation of Jamaica together are pursuing this project 50-50.
"The
last limb of the project is the asset payment of the date, whereby
the gas will be available to Jamaica and while we're pursuing
that, we're doing all the preliminary work-so we're still on track."
Asked
if there is an agreement between the two states, Paulwell continued:
"We have an agreement that will be reviewed once the gas
is available."
But
is there a problem with availability?
"What
we now need to be assured of, is the timeline for the delivery...
and once we get that then all other things will be determined."
Questioned
on the next bid round, he said: "The good news is that we
have been given by the Government to enter into private negotiations
with companies that are keen, though they did not participate
in the first bid round.
"A
bid round is not as attractive as if you have evidence of gushing
oil. Our data reveals that there is a high level of prospectivity
in and around Jamaica, that there's a large system somewhere,
it's just to find it."
