Yara International, the Norwegian ammonia company operating
at Point Lisas, said last week that it was studying a possible
expansion of its operations here in line with the company’s
strategy to expand its production capacity in regions with competitive
gas prices.
Yara is the sole owner of Yara Trinidad which owns and operates
an ammonia plant in T&T. It also owns a 49 per cent stake
in Tringen, a joint venture with National Enterprises Ltd (NEL)
a publicly listed company controlled by the Government.
Yara operates
and manages the two ammonia plants owned by Tringen.
Yara has
now initiated a project to explore further opportunities to
leverage its existing infrastructure in Trinidad. The scope
of the project includes increasing and optimising the ammonia
capacity and adding downstream and industrial products like
urea, ammonium nitrate and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN, a liquid
fertiliser).
The study
will especially evaluate the opportunity of technical ammonium
nitrate production for the growing markets in Latin America.
The scope
of the new production facility could imply investments between
US$600 and US$1,000 million, depending on the scheme selected.
Yara plans to make a decision by the end of this year.
Yara intends
to join up with local partners for the project and use its downstream
and industrial system to market the products.
